Things started well for the Spruce Kings Wednesday night against the Vernon Vipers, but penalties and turnovers again led to their eventual downfall.

Just four minutes into the game Matthew Stief and Nic Ponak led a 2-on-2, and Cooper Prechel with a heads up play recognized the opportunity to jump into the play to make it an odd man rush. As the trailer he took a pass from Nic Ponak, and sent a wrister past Andrew Shortridge for his first BCHL goal.

Vernon would reply shortly after though, as Joseph McLeod dropped down to make a save on a point shot from Bo Pellah. The rebound went right to Liam Finlay, and his shot was stopped, but with McLeod out of position, Ben Butcher was able to pickup the rebound the fire the puck into an empty net. They would take the lead when Callum Volpe walked across from the left point to the middle, and put a slap shot past McLeod.

Turning Point: Early in the second, the Spruce Kings had a golden chance for a goal as Braiden Epp had a 2-on-0 with Connor Logan, but Epp was denied the first time by Shortridge, and then again on the wrap around.

At the end of a man advantage in the period the Spruce Kings would tie the game back up, as Tilsley and Funk were able to win the faceoff back to Penner who blasted in a shot to end his 22 game goalless drought. Mitchell Oliver answered at the halfway mark of the game, as his slapshot from the point beat McLeod. Then with four minutes left there was some controversy as it appeared Joseph McLeod had covered the puck on the goal line, but the refs consulted, and ruled it a goal to Christian Cakebread for the 4-2 Vipers lead.

The Vipers would score the all important first goal of the third, as Cakebread scored again to make it 5-2. PG made it interesting though, as Nic Ponak scored on the power play tipping a shot in front from a point shot.

Pushing to get back within one, the Spruce Kings allowed an odd man rush, with Ben Butcher finishing things off the cap the game at 6-3.
