Five penalties against in the first period to start a
game isn’t ideal. The Spruce Kings found that out the hard way, as Adam
Brubacher, Stephen Penner, Cavin Tilsley, Adam Burnett, and Rylan Bechtel all
went to the box in the first. Technically Burnett went to the dressing room, as
he got a game misconduct after a check from behind.
The Spruce Kings would kill off a 5-on-3, but that was
after allowing two power play goals by Colton McCarthy, and Odeen Tufto went
down 2-0 to Vernon heading into the second.
That’s where the Spruce Kings did some damage of their
own on the man advantage, with Cavin Tilsley swatting in a puck that was
bouncing on the goal line. Then just past the halfway mark of the period a
point shot from Kyle Johnson found a streaking Hoffman who tipped the puck past
Barry.
In the third Prince George kept adding to their power
play totals, with two goals on the man advantage three minutes into the third.
First it was Braiden Epp, then Adam Brubacher picking up the goals. With the
marker, Brubacher is now on a three goal scoring streak.
Colton McCarthy would add a late man advantage goal,
but that’s as close as the Vipers would get, with the final score coming out to
4-3.
Turning
Point:
In the first period, the Spruce Kings had to kill off
nearly 1:40 of 5-on-3 hockey. Vernon was up 2-0 at the time, and going up by
three may have taken any life out of the Spruce Kings heading forward. The team
did allow three goals while on the PK, but that one kill was huge for the team.
Star
In Net:
For the second game in a row that he’s started, Liam
McCloskey was the star for the Prince George Spruce Kings. He made some
unbelievable stops at the Showcase against Victoria in a 2-1 double OT loss,
and then same tonight stopping 46 of 49 shots against him. The Spruce Kings didn’t
muster up a ton of shots, but managed to capitalize when needed.
Power
Play Prowess:
The Spruce Kings had three goals while on the man advantage
heading into the game, and managed to double that number on the way out. In
total, six of the total seven goals in the game were scored on the power play,
so both team’s took advantage while up a man, with Prince George going a perfect
3 for 3.
